From First Steps to First Words: The Importance of Milestones in Children

Development starts in the mother’s womb and continues throughout life. Child’s maximum brain development occurs from conception to 2 years of age, i.e., the first 1,000 days of life. Huge number of skills are learnt and the most rapid changes in skill acquisition are observed in the first 3 years of life. This is referred to as early childhood development.

Brain development is dependent not only on the child’s genetic constitution but also on his/her health status, nutrition and most importantly, his environmental stimulation. For every skill, there is an acceptable age range for acquisition. If a child fails to attain a skill beyond that range, we consider it a delay. In current state, we frequently get to hear that my child still cannot walk, walks but falls or sits inappropriately. As parents, we still fail to address these concerns.

Along with other contributing factors, parents influence the child’s development significantly. Many factors influence brain development and they need to be addressed simultaneously for best results.

When any issues are detected early, paediatric neuro physiotherapy can work with children to prevent or reduce these concerns of developmental delay. The earlier therapy begins, the more likely it is that the child can achieve optimal development.

For instance, in the case of Toe-walkers where the child starts walking on toes, early screening & intervention helps to promote normal walking pattern of the child.

Parents and caregivers play a vital role in the child’s recovery and therapy process. Working closely with families to educate them on how they can help at home, ensures better results and provides support for the family.

Guidance on how to adjust the child’s environment, adapt activities and promote their independence in daily life can help both the child and the family members feel empowered and supported throughout the journey.

With ongoing support, many children achieve a higher level of independence and lead fulfilling lives, despite their challenges.

The ability to participate in activities like sports, games and school can make a world of difference in a child’s emotional and social development.

By addressing both physical and emotional needs, neuro physiotherapy provides comprehensive care for children facing these challenges, making it a powerful tool in their developmental journey. Don’t shy away from visiting a neuro physiotherapist to clear any concerns with your child’s developmental milestones!
