Standard Diagnostic Criteria (IOM/CDC Guidelines)

A person is diagnosed with CFS if they have:

  1. Severe Chronic Fatigue
    – Lasting 6 months or longer
    – Not due to exertion
    – Not relieved by rest
  2. Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM)
  3. Unrefreshing Sleep
  4. Plus at least one of the following:
    Cognitive impairment
    Orthostatic intolerance

Physiotherapy Treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  1. Energy Management (Pacing Techniques)
    Pacing, initially described by health psychologist Ellen Goudsmit in 1989, advises patients to: ‘do as much as you can within your limits’
