What is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis Syndrome happens when the piriformis muscle, a small muscle deep in your buttock, compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve. This can cause pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttock and down the leg, similar to sciatica.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the buttock, especially when sitting
  • Pain that goes down the back of the thigh
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg
  • Pain that worsens with walking, running, or climbing stairs
  • Tenderness when pressing on the buttock

Common Causes

  • Overuse or injury to the piriformis muscle
  • Prolonged sitting or poor posture
  • Muscle imbalances or weakness
  • Tight hip muscles
